Vintage Connection and Blades Construction

My lovely friend Heather recently opened an amazing vintage clothing store in

Philadelphia and she just started carrying my bags. I am thrilled to have them in her store, next to her carefully handpicked vintage clothes that she finds all over the East Coast. I love vintage, such great shapes, colors, craftsmanship... they really don't make clothes like they used to back in the day.

And...
If you happen to be in the Tri-State area this Friday night- you must come to her Spring/Summer Trunk Show, Friday, April 4th, 5-8pm
There will be Shopping, Champagne & Cupcakes... does it get any better? oh yeah- and my bags will be there too!

Our oceans are turning into plastic...are we?

"A vast swath of the Pacific, twice the size of Texas, is full of a plastic stew that is entering the food chain. Scientists say these toxins are causing obesity, infertility...and worse."

New plastic bag recycling bill to be passed in New York City... So frustrating!

I don't understand why anyone is wasting their time talking about recycling plastic bags! Why can't we just stop using them????
"Paper or plastic? It’s no longer much of a choice in the United States, where plastic bags — introduced in 1977 — make up 90 percent of all grocery bags, according to the Progressive Bag Alliance, which represents plastic bag manufacturers. Now two City Council members, concerned about the number of plastic bags entering the New York City waste stream, say supermarkets should be required to take an active role in recycling them." Step It Up 2007

I got to go to an amazing event and lecture- Climate Change & Farming in the Northeast at Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture, on Saturday in Tarrytown, NY. My friends Sarah and Becky and I had a really nice time up at Stone Barns and we learned a lot... not to mention the fact that we were able to sample amazing cheese at a store called Mint along the main road in Tarrytown.

The event was a part of Step it Up 2007, A National Day for Climate Change.
Where on November 3rd they organized hundreds and hundreds of rallies in all 50 states and sent over 14,000 invitations to politicians to join us and offer their plan to stop global warming. And together, we united under 1Sky - the solutions that science and justice demand. We are the leaders we have been waiting for - and our movement has just begun.

Plastic Ain't My Bag Initiative

This is from We Are What We Do a movement out of England. Read below to find out more-
"We're not another charity. We're not an institution. We Are What We Do is a movement. We'd like to inspire people to use their everyday actions to change the world. Whoever they are. And wherever they are. And that includes you.

We've created 100 simple, everyday actions that can improve our environment, our health, and our communities and make our planet and the people on it much happier. We started by putting these actions into a book but it rather burst its bindings. Today it has gained momentum, gathered community and become a global movement with two books and over 500,000 registered actions."

I love that they give you tips on how to decline a plastic bag... the people at the cash registers are on automatic pilot and I usually have to repeat myself at least two times to make sure they don't give me a plastic bag.

Sustainably Chic Reusable Bags... Look good and do good- All at the same time

Hello and Welcome to Blades Construction Company!

I design one-of-a kind, hand decorated string tote bags, allowing women to express their individual sense of style and protect our environment all at the same time.

I use vintage pieces, buttons and patches, handmade artisan buttons, and trims from all over the world.
They make wonderful and sand-free beach bags AND they hold 40 pounds, the same as a regular plastic shopping bag.
The bags are just like the market bags used in Europe, perfect for storing in your purse or car or back pocket- ready to use at anytime.
The advantage to using my bags is that they allow you to: reduce waste, help save the environment, AND look effortlessly chic.

Uses for the bags:
-Picnics (who doesn't want to walk around with some fresh fruit and a baguette sticking out of their bag?)
-Traveling (great for helping your organize in a suitcase or duffel bag)
-Shopping
-Gym Bag
-Laundry bag, allow your dirty clothes to breathe
-and did I mention the ultimate beach bag- the sand falls right through!

Please take a look and feel free to ask me any questions that you may have about the bags.

Oprah thinks reusable bags are cool... hopefully she will motivate others to re-use bags or bring their own.
